Car stuff -
We used Julian at Overland Cruisers to do most of the work to our car. Give him a call on +4484 5508 6863.
Frogs Island may also be able to help but we found them very expensive and difficult to work with. You can get them on +4412 3583 2100
Documents-
Carnet- for us it was much cheaper to get the carnet in South Africa.
Meliza Chegwidden (MChegwidden@aasa.co.za ; +2711 799 1009) is very helpful.
You could also get the carnet from Paul Gowen (PKGowen@rac.co.uk) at the RAC in the UK.
Insurance- Mike Berry (mike@campbellirvine.com) sorted us out with some bespoke travel insurance which is obviously difficult to get for some of the countries.
Make sure you take plenty of Fiches
Website- buy one from Woothemes
If you are importing your car to South Africa you will need
1) an LOA from the NRCS, try Xolisa at MBANGUXB@nrcs.org.za
2) an import permit from ITAC. Try Rene at rvanvuuren@itac.org.za
3) a couple of vehicle valuations in the UK.
Couple of other docs required.. SARS can provide more information. Contact Peter at pmilongo@sars.gov.za or +2721 413 6732
Once in RSA you will need to get an SAD500 (bill of entry) form which is prepared by a clearing agent (clearing agent fees at border = R100) which must then be ‘block stamped’ by SARS. (Really good idea to do this all at the point of entry if possible)
Once you have all these docs contact Amelia at the Marlboro Vehicle Licencing Dept in Johannesburg on 011 321 6337 and she will advise you what the next steps are (RPI doc from police at Langlaagte, vehicle weight certificate from Langlaagte, police clearance certificate, roadworthy certificate are a few that come to mind. Make sure they stamp and sign all the docs correctly or you’ll have to go back). Its a long and painful process but probably worth it.
